Hadassah Medical Center Ein Kerem – Jerusalem
Jerusalem, a Holy City for half of the world’s population, is a logical choice for the installation of a Cloak of Conscience. It is a great honor to have received the invitation of Prof. Zeev Rotstein, General Director of Hadassah Medical Center, to install a Cloak at this prestigious institution. The Inauguration takes place at the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the first medical services by the Jewish nurse Henrietta Scold in what was then Palestine. The founding moment of today’s Hadassah Medical Center.
For over a century, Hadassah has extended its hands to all, regardless of race, religion, or gender. It has always embodied the concept that Medicine serves as a Bridge to Peace.
The combined skills of more than 5,000 health care professionals – 800 physicians 2,200 nurses, 500 paramedical and 1,500 support staff – bring health and hope to the people of the region and beyond.
In addition to his function as Symbol of Peace and Conscience, the Cloak will have another important task at the hospital, because Art can be a fundamental part of the healing process.
There is scientific evidence that looking at art eases one’s perception of physical pain. Artworks like the Cloak improve the mood and lift the spirits of patients and the people working in the hospital. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, wrote, “Beautiful objects have an actual physical effect. They are an actual means of recovery”.
On 24 March 2019 Anna Chromy’s Cloak of Conscience was installed at Hadassah Medical Center at Ein Kerem, Jerusalem.
