MADAME BUTTERFLY OR “A DEADLY CONSCIENCE”

This is a tale of “Butterfly” which you have never seen.
Inspired by Giacomo Puccini’s famous opera, Anna Chromy has created a project for a ballet, with a number of scenic sketches, complemented by costume designs for the characters. The idea originated at a performance of the opera at the Puccini Festival at Torre Del Lago in Tuscany, where the design project had its first public presentation at the lyric season 2017.
Cio-Cio-San’s touching mixture of sweetness and anguish, vulnerability and courage has inspired Puccini to some of his most emotionally expansive and heartbreakingly tender melodies. No wonder that it inspired Anna Chromy to some of her most emotionally charged drawings. However, it is also the life story of Cio-Cio-San that has spurred Anna to treat this subject, a classic example of how the absence of conscience can lead to destruction and self-annihilation.
You can touch with your hands Anna’s compassion with the victim and her outrage about the attitude of Pinkerton, a perfect example for a Western superiority complex. Anna continues with this project her “Conscience Art”, which she has developed over the last 20 years in order to awaken the conscience of her contemporaries. A development that culminated in her monumental “Cloak of Conscience”, a space of contemplation of our inner self, sculpted into a single bloc of 250 tons from the famous Michelangelo quarry in Carrara.
