The University of Pisa houses one of the most prestigious scientific institutions
worldwide – the
Scuola Superiore Sant' Anna .
Founded through a Napoleonic decree in 1810 this institution is part of the restricted circle of the
“Schools of Excellence”, with scientists and pupils from all parts of the globe. It is located in some of the most beautiful
palaces of Pisa and incorporates also the site if the former Sant'Anna convent.
It was therefore a particular honor for Anna Chromy that the directors of the institution decided to locate her
“Sisyphos Family”, with its tribute to the perennial quest of man for knowledge, in the inner courtyard of this World Monuments site.
Scientific research is an uphill battle, like life itself. Every time we climb a peak and believe to have solved the problem, we find out that,
like Sisyphos, we are only at the foot of an even higher mountain with ever more complex questions to resolve.
Anna Chromy`s Sisyphos is therefore a perfect parabola of the daily challenges faced by all members of the Scuola Normale Superiore.
