Anna Chromy represents, without
a doubt, one of the most significant, leading figures on the most recent
international sculpture scene, for the energy with which she manages to interpret
the dreams, tragedies and aspirations of an era like the one we live in.
She dissects the sensitivity of our era by turning to the founding archetypes
of our collective imagination. She revisits the most emblematic figures of
the mythical classics and transforms them into metaphors for our more complicated,
contemporary reality. More than just reflecting their own inner stories,
she manages to add to them a dimension of cultural tension found in a European
spirit searching for its own plausible, essential identity. The artist is
indeed convinced that the poetic re-evaluation of the myths of Europe can
be part of a collective re-establishment process capable of healing the “symbolic
deficit” so characteristic of current European construction. That is
why she has turned once again to the sources of that forgotten soul, in order
to suggest some meaning and value in the idea that although cultures today
differ so much from each other and some are turning their back on their deepest
roots, they may once have shared the same common origins.
These 30 works of art, all life-size, in bronze and marble, have given
rise to the largest, theatrical staging of open air sculptures, systematically
designed to embrace many mythological characters who have contributed most
to the structuring and creation of myths in our collective and individual
subconscious. Characters like Europa, Alcyone, Cronus, Sisyphus, Orpheus,
Eurydice, Ulysses, Hercules, the river Gods of the Earth or Don Juan and
other Mozart characters who thanks to the imagination of Anna Chromy have
undergone fiery metamorphoses and admirably manage to reflect the feelings
and conflicts of the world in which we live.
Her style asserts itself for the original, succinct way with which her
visionary character emerges. Strength and elegance of the symbol, mastery
of the shaping, pathos and sense of movement all contribute to making her
mythological characters unmistakable, like many mirror images in which
crucial aspects of our destiny are reflected. Her art is refined art, able
to combine tradition and artistic innovation as well as having a direct,
profound impact on the audience. The large crowds of people who enthusiastically
linger in front of her work, permanent features in many European capital
city squares, bear witness to that.
